He: Yes. At last. It was so hard to wait.
She: Do you want me to leave?
He: No! Don’t even think about it.
She: Do you love me?
He: Of course! Over and over!
She: Have you ever cheated on me?
He: No! Why are you even asking?
She: Will you kiss me?
He: Every chance I get.
She: Will you hit me?
He: Are you crazy! I’m not that kind of person!

Johnson Controls and Saft Advanced Power Solutions have opened what they call the world’s first factory dedicated exclusively to manufacturing lithium-ion batteries for electric and hybrid vehicles.
The plant, in Nersac, France, will produce 5,000 batteries annually to start, but company officials said they can quickly ramp up production to meet the demand from customers that include General Motors, Chrysler and Daimler’s Mercedes-Benz division.
According to Financial Times, the joint venture also plans to expand manufacturing to Asia and other regions. “We will have a global operation with capabilities in each of the regions,” said Alex Molinaroli, head of power solutions for Johnson Controls US.
Johnson Controls is the world’s leading supplier of automotive batteries and Saft is among the biggest producers of nickel-cadmium and lithium-ion batteries. (The photo shows the lithium-ion battery Johnson Controls featured in its I3 concept vehicle at the North American International Auto Show.) Financial Times says the joint venture suggests electric and hybrid vehicles have “reached an industrial tipping point” and production of such vehicles could increase dramatically.
That remains to be seen, of course, and Casey Selecman, head of North American powertrain forecasts at CSM Worldwide, tells us its too early to say what impact the new plant will have on electric and hybrid vehicle development. Still, most of the major automakers are developing electric and plug-in electric hybrid vehicles - GM alone has promised to roll out one new hybrid model every three months for the next four years - and they’re all looking at Li-Ion batteries to save weight and provide better packaging.
“The customers (Johnson Controls listed) are all GM hybrid buyers, so this battery is likely to be linked with that particular technology,” he says, refering to the hybrid drivetrain collaboration between GM, BMW and what was DaimlerChrysler. “GM has talked about an entire plant of HEV transmissions at that usually means 300-350,000 per year. That would certainly be an equal amount of batteries at least.”
If nothing else, mass-producing Li-ion batteries, even at the relatively small number of 5,000 a year, will help bring down costs and advance the technology.
